Avitech Systems provides an integrated music and voice evacuation solution for the new
Boardwalk Hotel

As part of Sun International’s (SI) R1bn expansion to Port Elizabeth’s Boardwalk Casino and
Entertainment World, the new 5 star Boardwalk Hotel has become a landmark on the beachfront
skyline.

The Boardwalk Hotel, Port ElizabethBoasting 140 rooms, two swimming pools, a Spa and a 2500m2 international grade
convention centre, the hotel caters for both business guests and holiday groups with ease.
As with any prestige development, the ambiance of the public spaces is important, and much
planning went into interior décor and furnishings. Recognising as well that music plays a vital part in
creating atmosphere, the Boardwalk’s development team specified BOSE loudspeakers for all public
spaces in the hotel and conference areas.

Local audio and AV integration specialists, Avitech Systems, were contracted to provide and
innovative solution which combined the flexibility of a zoned background music system, with the
reliability and standards compliance of an automated voice evacuation system. Lawrence Bricknell,
Avitech Systems project leader, was enthusiastic about the final solution. “Using a combination of
BIAMP AUDIAFLEX digital audio processors and VOCIA voice evacuation components, Avitech
offered a single system solution that could meet the complex requirements of room-combining
zones in the convention centre, multiple music channels in the public areas, as well as provideThe Boardwalk Hotel, Port Elizabethemergency messaging to assist with a staged evacuation.”

During normal operation the background music system is adjusted by discrete wall controllers or
from a graphical interface on selected PCs and wireless tablets in the hotel; in the event of an
emergency, security staff have instant access to the entire system to play pre-recorded or live
announcements logically designated evacuation zones.

The VOCIA voice evacuation system is compliant to internationally recognised EN-54 standards and
features comprehensive integrity monitoring and redundancy. “Being network based allowed us to
locate the amplifiers where they were needed” explained Lawrence, “which saved us running cables
from one side of the complex to the other.”

Avitech Systems have now completed sound system installations in the Casino, the Action Bar, the
Hotel and the Musical Fountains, all built on BIAMP’s AUDIAFLEX and VOCIA network based digital
audio platforms. “This means that we can share audio between any of the systems at the Boardwalk
without having to re-cable racks of equipment” adds Lawrence.
